Dog Training Philosophy

We train all kinds of dogs - big, small, and in between, all ages and all levels of obedience. We do not stereotype breeds, nor do we have a cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all approach to training your dog. We believe that each dog is an individual that deserves to be treated as such.

Whether your goal is to take your untrained dog from chaos to control or you want to achieve rock-solid off-leash control of your dog in real-world situations, our training programs can take you there. Whether you and your dog prefer group classes or more personalized instruction with our private lessons, or if you wish for a professional to train your dog for you, we can accommodate your dog training needs.

Our "formula for success" has produced effective, impressive results for a multitude of dogs and their owners.

Together, we utilize proven techniques to teach your dog to behave in a way you never thought possible!

You will gain a well-mannered, reliable, and more relaxed companion for the rest of your life, but maybe most importantly, YOU will become a more confident, relaxed and loving owner that thoroughly enjoys being with your furry friend.

The CDU approach to training utilizes science-based, positive reinforcement techniques that are proven effective, produce lasting results and are enjoyable for both the dog and owner. We do not condone the use of pain, intimidation, confrontation, violence, or domination. Training your dog to a very high level is done successfully on a regular flat collar or body harness, which excludes the use of choke chains, prong collars or shock collars.

Our technique includes the use of a marker (verbal or sound) to pinpoint correct behavior. The marker clearly communicates to your dog that what he or she is doing at that exact moment in time will earn reinforcement. Commonly used reinforcers in dog training include food, toys, praise, a walk, a ride in the car, or anything that your dog really loves.

We do believe in corrections but they will never involve pain, fear or intimidation. We strive to enhance the relationship and bond between you and your dog. Harsh punishment will only prove to break down the trust and bond you have built with your dog.

Our philosophy encompasses the physical and mental well-being of dogs. We believe that a well-trained, well-exercised and well-nourished dog will be a balanced and enjoyable companion for life.

CDU offers specialized training such as AKC Competitive Obedience and Rally, Tracking and Recreational Agility. No matter what you do with your dog, Colorado Dog University is Southeast Denver's authority in obedience training and behavior modification.
